Our Approach to Sports Injury Physio & Rehab

Every sports injury and recovery is unique, but our process follows a clear structure that ensures you get the care and progression your body needs so you can get back on the field – safely and with confidence.

  1. Assessment: Understand your injury, lifestyle, and training goals.
  2. Treatment: Personalised plan, hands-on therapy, sports-specific rehab.
  3. Progression: Build resilience with tailored exercise, cross-training, and return-to-play guidance.

What to expect at your first appointment:

We’ll start with an assessment at our Hyde Park Corner physiotherapy clinic in Sandton and discuss the plan for treatment. You may be referred for diagnostic imaging (such as X-rays or sonar) or to consult a specialist if needed. We often use hands-on techniques to support recovery – myofascial release, dry needling, ultrasound/TENS, or orthopaedic manipulative therapy (OMT). You’ll also receive guided exercises for each recovery stage.

Our goal is to protect injured structures, facilitate healing, restore balanced movement, and rebuild strength – so you can return to training and competition with confidence.

Want to see this process in action? Explore our case studies, where we share real patient success stories and the recovery journey through both the physio’s and patient’s eyes.

FAQs about Sports Injury Physio & Rehab

These FAQs address some of the most common questions about sports physiotherapy in Sandton and what to expect at Hyde Park Physiotherapy. (read more…)

When should I see a physio for pain after training?

Pain that started suddenly while doing sport should be assessed by a physio or doctor within a day or 2 of injury and before you train again. Aches and pains that come on after training should settle within a day or 2 – if they worsen or cause you to limp / avoid certain movements, it’s best to have them assessed.

How many sessions will I need?

After most sports injuries you’ll normally notice improvement within 3-6 sessions. Return to training after mild sprains and strains often being 1-2weeks. Moderate injuries like knee or ankle pain will normally take 6-8 weeks for return to normal training. Sports injury rehab after more serious injury and surgery (like a severe ankle sprain or ACL repair) depends on the injury, but usually takes anywhere from 3 to 9months.

Do I need doctor’s referral for sports physio?

No, in South Africa you can come straight in to a physio without a referral. You can book here. Where needed we’ll refer you for imaging or to a specialist.
(Note: Some medical aid plans won’t cover physiotherapy without a referral from your primary care physician – please check this directly with your medical aid.)

What’s the difference between sports physio and regular physio?

While all physiotherapist receive sports injury training in their degree, physios with a special interest in sports (aka sports physiotherapists 😉) have additional training in diagnosing and managing sports-related injuries. At Hyde Park Physiotherapy, we focus on load management, return-to-play testing, and performance-based rehab to ensure you recover safely and confidently.

Do you accept medical aid?

Hyde Park Physiotherapy isn’t contracted in with any medical aids. This means that you pay after each session and we provide you with a detailed statement that you can submit to your medical aid to claim back. Info about billing
