Meet Carmen Baier

Carmen Baier, physiotherapist and owner of Hyde Park Physiotherapy in Sandton Johannesburg

I’m a physiotherapist with 15+ years of experience helping busy, active people move out of pain and back into the things they love – whether that’s sport, travel, work, or just getting through the week without their body fighting them.

But I’m interested in more than just fixing problems.

I want to help you understand your body, and build the capacity for it to handle life – not just recover from it when things go wrong. That means looking beyond the injury itself: at how you move, how you load your body, how stress and sleep and habits shape your resilience. And then building a plan that actually fits your life.

My approach blends hands-on therapy, movement retraining, and education – so you don’t just feel better, you understand why, and you leave each session with something useful to take home.

I have a particular interest in shoulder injuries and sports rehab, post-surgical recovery, and the role of behaviour and habit in long-term recovery. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about why people struggle to follow through on rehab, and how to make it easier to actually do the work.

My goal isn’t just to fix the problem in front of me. It’s to help you understand your body well enough that you’re less likely to be back with the same one.

I grew up in rural Zimbabwe, studied physiotherapy at the University of Pretoria, and spent several years working and travelling abroad before putting down roots in Johannesburg. Those years – different healthcare systems, different cultures, different ways people relate to their bodies – shaped how I think about care: with curiosity, humility, and respect for every person’s story.

Outside the clinic, I run Bridge & Bend – an online movement platform where my interest in behaviour change, habit science, and long-term health gets to stretch its legs. It’s for people who want to build strength and body awareness between injuries, not just after them. If that sounds like you, you’re welcome to explore it.

Areas of Carmen’s expertise and training:

  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy (University of Pretoria, 2009)
  • The Advanced Neuromusculoskeletal Course, SASP (2011)
  • Certified in Pilates (Mat and Reformer)
  • Functional Movement Screen Level 1 & 2
  • Trained in dry needling and movement pattern retraining
  • Additional courses in health behaviour change and behavioural psychology
  • Clinical interest in: shoulder rehab, sport injury, rehabilitative Pilates, and habit change in recovery

💡From our case studies: “Not only is Carmen exceptionally knowledgeable, she also truly cares. She was with me every step of the way, making sure I understood what we were doing and why. It was easy to do all the rehab exercises because I knew exactly why I was doing them.” – Terrence | trail runner → Read Terrence’s full story

Liza Lambert’s Legacy

Hyde Park Physiotherapy was founded by Liza Lambert – a physiotherapist of exceptional skill, clinical wisdom, and genuine warmth. I first worked alongside Liza early in my career, and she shaped the way I think about patient care, ongoing education, and what it means to build a practice worth trusting.

When Liza passed away in 2022, I took over the practice with a deep sense of responsibility to honour what she had created. Her standard of care – thorough, personal, and always patient-first – remains the benchmark I work toward every day.

If you were previously a patient of Liza’s, you are warmly welcome here.
